This Painting represents the central event of the New Testament, the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

The Biblical Narrative of the Crucifixion

The Gospels ( Matthew , Mark , Luke and John ) provide the primary accounts of the event . After being arrested and tied by the Sanhedrin, Jesus was brough before the Roman governor Pantius Pilate. Despite Pilate's hesitation to find grounds for condemnation, he ultimately sentenced Jesus to be crucified a brutal method of capital punishment used by Romans.

The Journey to Calvary : - Jesus was mocked, scourged and forced to carry the cross toward a place called Golgotta ( meaning the place of a skull ). Along the way Roman soldiers compelled a man named Simon of Cyrene to help carry it.

The Event at Golgotta, Jesus was crucified between two criminals. The solider placed a sign above his head stating " Jesus of Nazareth , the king of Jews " in three Language Hebrew , Latin and Greek.

The final moments : As Jesus hung on the cross , the sky grew dark for three hours. During this time, he spoke seven recorded statements including , " Father , forgive them for they do not know what they are doing and his final words are It is finished ".

Significance : Upon his death , the curtain of the temple was torn from top to bottom and the earth shook. Christian believe his event was the ultimate sacrifice , where Jesus as the " Lamb of God paid the debt of sin for all humanity , offering a way for reconciliation with God.
